The first question we get from brand-side teams who’ve been around production a while is some variant of: should we shoot this anamorphic?

The first question from teams who haven’t been around production is: what’s anamorphic?

This is the answer to both.

The mechanics, briefly

Spherical lenses do what your eye does — they project the image onto the sensor without distorting it. Whatever the sensor resolves, the lens hands over.

Anamorphic lenses squeeze the image horizontally during capture. A 2x anamorphic lens compresses a 2.35:1 ultra-wide composition into a 1.18:1 sensor area, which gets unsqueezed in post to recover the wide aspect. This was originally a 1950s solution to making widescreen films on existing 35mm stock — but the side effects of the squeeze became the look itself.

Those side effects are why people care:

  • Oval bokeh. Out-of-focus highlights are stretched into ovals instead of circles. This is the single most identifiable anamorphic visual cue. It reads as “cinema” in a way that’s hard to fake in post.
  • Horizontal lens flares. Anamorphic flares streak horizontally across the frame in long, thin lines — the J.J. Abrams Star Trek signature.
  • Compressed depth of field. Anamorphic glass tends to render depth differently — the falloff is steeper and more painterly. Skin against a soft background looks more dimensional.
  • Edge distortion. Subtle barrel distortion at the edges of frame, especially on faces close to the corners. Some directors love this; some fight it.

When we use anamorphic

Three conditions usually need to be true for us to shoot anamorphic:

1. The shot is composed for it. Anamorphic glass loves wide compositions with negative space, faces in foreground against deep backgrounds, light sources in frame to flare against. If the director’s blocking is tight medium shots in cluttered environments, anamorphic doesn’t show off; it just gives the camera operator a harder time.

2. The deliverable is the right aspect. A 2.39:1 final cut on a hero spot or a documentary is anamorphic’s natural home. A 1:1 social cut crops out everything anamorphic was doing for you.

3. The lighting plan supports it. Anamorphic flares require practicals or hard sources in frame. Most flat office interview lighting is anamorphic’s worst enemy — you get the bokeh quirks without any of the drama.

If any of those three are off, we’ll usually shoot spherical. Anamorphic is a tool, not a sticker.

When we use spherical

Most of the time, frankly. Specifically:

  • Documentary where we don’t control framing tightly. The edge distortion that’s a feature on a brand film becomes a liability when you’re operating handheld through a busy room.
  • Interview-driven industrial. Talking heads at 50–85mm lenses. Spherical primes are sharper, faster, and don’t introduce visual cues that compete with what the speaker is saying.
  • Anything ultra-wide. Anamorphic at 25mm equivalent gets weird fast. Spherical wides stay clean.
  • Tight-aspect deliverables. 16:9, 9:16 vertical, 1:1 — anamorphic was designed for cinemascope, not Instagram.

The gear we run

Our anamorphic primes are the Atlas Orion set — 32mm, 40mm, 65mm, 80mm, and 100mm. Atlas is the modern indie/brand standard. Cleaner than vintage Lomos (less weird “character” flare), sharper than older Cooke anamorphics, and rentable for a fraction of a Master Anamorphic kit. The 65mm is our most-used lens; the 40 and 80 cover the rest.

Our spherical kit varies by shoot — we’ll typically rent in Cooke S4i, Zeiss Supreme, or Sigma FF Cines depending on what the project’s color and texture call for.

How this lands on a brand budget

Anamorphic glass costs more to rent. Sometimes meaningfully more — the difference between a Cooke S4i set and an Atlas Orion set on a 3-day shoot can be a few thousand dollars. On top of that, anamorphic eats more shoot time per setup: lighting takes longer because you’re chasing the flares; focus pulls are tighter because the depth of field is shallower; the AC has to think harder.

The trade we make with clients: anamorphic on the hero piece, spherical on the cutdowns. A 3-spot brand campaign might shoot the hero in 65mm Atlas Orion and the supplementary B-roll in spherical. The hero feels theatrical; the cutdowns feel polished but don’t fight the format they’re delivered in.

What this means for the brief

When we’re scoping a project with you, the anamorphic-or-spherical decision happens in the treatment phase, not on set. Two questions we’ll ask:

  1. What deliverable runs the most? If the answer is “the 6-second cut on Instagram,” anamorphic isn’t earning its budget. If the answer is “the 90-second cut on the website hero,” it might be.
  2. What’s the reference? If your moodboard is full of stills from films shot on anamorphic — Villeneuve, Deakins, the Dune duology — and you don’t know it yet, we’ll point it out and decide together whether you want to chase that look.

The films that look “cinema” on a brand reel almost always look that way because of anamorphic glass and proper grading. The films that don’t can still be excellent — they just live in a different vocabulary.
