For about a decade, the only way to get spec-grade slow motion for a brand shoot was to rent a Phantom Flex 4K. Day rate of $4–6K, separate operator, separate workflow. Most brand budgets couldn’t justify it for more than a single hero shot.
In 2024, Freefly released the Ember S5K — 4K at 1000 frames per second, RAW, in a body small enough to operate as a regular A-cam alternative. We bought one. It’s changed the math on slow motion across our brand work.
This is what we’ve learned.
What the Ember actually does
Specs that matter:
- 4K resolution at 1000fps. Most prosumer high-frame-rate options cap at 1080p or have a heavy crop at 4K speeds. The Ember holds full sensor at 1000fps.
- Up to 2000fps in lower resolutions. Useful for liquid work, splash macros, and similar specialty shots.
- CinemaDNG RAW recording. Same RAW workflow as our cinema A-cameras; one less codec to manage in post.
- PL mount. Means we use our existing cinema lens kit (Atlas Orion, Cooke S4i, Sigma FF Cines) without adapter compromises.
- Roughly 8 lbs body weight. Operable handheld for brief takes, mountable on standard cinema rigs.
What the Ember doesn’t do that the Phantom does: shoot at 4K at 2000+ fps. For projects where you genuinely need 2000fps at full resolution, Phantom is still the only answer. For 99% of brand work, 1000fps at 4K is sufficient.
The cost difference
A Phantom Flex 4K rental + operator: ~$4K–6K per day.
The Ember (when we owned it 18 months in): essentially zero marginal day-rate. We bake it into our standard cinema kit pricing. Most projects that get slow motion now are projects that wouldn’t have justified the Phantom rental.
This isn’t an unusual gear-economics story for the second half of the 2020s — the camera market is ranging from “feature-only available at $6K/day” to “ownable for less than the cost of a year of rentals” inside about 36 months. The Ember just happens to be the example we lived through.
Where slow motion belongs in a script
Owning a 1000fps camera doesn’t make every shot a slow-motion shot. Three principles:
1. Slow motion is an emphasis tool, not a default. It says “look at this specifically.” Used too often, it stops emphasizing anything; the audience tunes out. We use slow motion in roughly 8–15% of total runtime for a typical brand film.
2. The shot has to deserve it. Slow motion works on:
- Athletic motion (a swing, a run, a jump)
- Liquid (pouring, splashing, droplets)
- Fabric and hair
- Faces in moments of small emotional shift (a laugh that takes 0.4 seconds at real time becomes a 4-second moment)
- Particulate (dust, smoke, snow)
It doesn’t work on:
- Static subjects
- Faces during dialogue (lip-sync becomes uncanny)
- Anything where the speed is the point of the action (a car driving slowly is just a car driving slowly)
3. Slow motion has to cut. A great slow-motion shot in isolation is often a bad slow-motion shot in the edit. The cut into and out of the slow-mo determines whether the moment lands. We pre-plan slow-motion sequences with the editor, not with the camera operator.
What we shoot the Ember on
Default workflow for brand sets where slow motion is in the script:
- The Ember runs as a B-cam during the relevant sequences, parked on a slider or sticks at 1000fps.
- The cinema A-cam (RED V-Raptor or ARRI Alexa 35) handles real-time coverage of the same action.
- In post, the editor cuts between real-time and slow-motion as the moment requires.
Because the Ember runs the same RAW workflow and the same lens kit, the colorist treats Ember footage and A-cam footage identically. No texture mismatch in the grade. No “this came from a different camera” feel in the cut.
Three brand shots from the last year
To make this concrete, three specific Ember shots from recent projects we’d say earn their slot:
A bartender pouring a cocktail at 800fps for a hospitality client. The shot runs 4 seconds in the cut; the audience watches the liquid arc out of the bottle, hit the glass, and cascade. It’s the moment the brand is selling — craft, deliberateness, attention.
A dancer’s hair in motion at 1000fps for a fashion-adjacent brand. Same shot at 24fps would have been gone in two frames. At 1000fps, you get to watch the way light falls through hair as it moves, which is exactly what the brand wanted to communicate.
A drop of water hitting a surface at 2000fps for a wellness brand. Macro plus slow motion plus a beautiful subject. Reads as theatrical because nobody can capture this with their phone.
In all three cases, the slow motion isn’t decoration. It’s the moment the script is built around.
When we don’t bring it
If a script doesn’t have a beat that benefits from slow motion, we don’t bring the Ember. It’s a tool, not a signature. Plenty of our best brand work has zero slow-motion in the cut.
A common conversation early in pre-pro:
- Client: “We saw the slow motion in your reel — can we have a moment like that in our film?”
- Us: “Maybe. What’s the moment?”
If they have an answer, we shoot it. If they don’t, we tell them honestly that slow motion shoehorned into a script that doesn’t ask for it makes the film worse, not better.
The bigger point
Owning specialty gear should make you say no to using it more often, not less. The reason a Phantom rental gets used on a film is that someone paid $4–6K for it and feels the need to justify the cost. The reason an owned-tool gets used is that the script asks for it. The first is reflex; the second is craft.
